I've tried absolutely everything and it still won't install. Both computers fully updated, although I wonder it it was an updated that caused the problem. If you are running Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2, the in-box Connector software doesn't currently work. I am anxious to give this solution a try.

I've tried manually activating the services, changing the client computer's name, disabling ipv6, changing the registry, uninstalling .net 4, not using OpenDNS.. new 64b w7 laptop would not connect.
Reconfiguring my router (removing the bogus domain name) took care of the problem. I can access the server's shared folders just fine, but when I go to install the Connector software it error's and says: The installation is cancelled The Windows Home Server 2011
